This chapter first describes the concept of self inductance and mutual inductance and then explains how to determine the energy stored in magnetically coupled coils. A circuit model of a linear transformer is then illustrated. The chapter also shows the circuit model of ideal and iron‐core transformers. A transformer is said to be linear if the coils are wound on a magnetically linear material, a material with a constant magnetic permeability.
An ideal transformer consists of two magnetically coupled coils having N1 and N2 turns respectively, and exhibiting the following three properties: The coefficient of coupling is unity. The self-inductance of each coil is infinite. The coil losses, due to parasitic resistances, are negligible. The Ideal Transformer 23 …

Unintentional inductive coupling can cause signals from one circuit to be induced into a nearby circuit, this is called cross-talk, and is a form of electromagnetic interference. An inductively coupled transponder consists of a solid state transceiver chip connected to a large coil that functions as an antenna. Magnetic Circuits. Properties of Magnetic Materials.

I’d like to emphasize that mutual inductance is very important in electric circuits of all ratings (from low power level mother board electronics to high 3.1 Theory of two magnetically coupled RLC circuits Two inductively coupled RLC circuits are shown below (Figure 1). Two resonant frequencies are obtained owing to the fact that there are two circuits. The separation of the two frequencies depends on the value of the mutual inductance M, defined as the ratio of the Instantaneous energy stored in a magnetically coupled circuit: w = 1 2 L 1 i 1 2 + 1 2 L 2 i 2 2 ± M i 1 i 2 where: M = "+" if both currents enter or leave the dotted terminals.
